ABB Terra 360 Model

Ardgowan Distillery (ii)
The second shot of the planned new Ardgowan Distillery, showing the beautifully graded coloured roof cladding, revealing expansive concrete and glass interiors.
Planned new Ardogowan Distillery (i)
A brand new zero-carbon facility for Whisky production near Greenock, west of Glasgow.
My previous visualisations for Ardgowan were for a design that didn’t get the required funding. This design has the funding, and at the time of writing, is under construction. These visualisation (a group of four) were required to share the vision with the public.
Ardgowan Distillery Interior (ii)
A different view of the Distillery interior, showing the mashtun in the foreground with washbacks and stills in the background. Public can view the activity in the distillery either from the cordoned-off area to the left, or from the viewing platform above.
Ardgowan Distillery Interior (i)
A view looking down into the core of the distillery where all the magic happens. Stills in the foreground, mashtun and washbacks in the background, and cordoned-off area to the right for public viewing with various display cases providing information about the science and the history of Ardgowan whisky production.
Gravitricity's alternative approach to hydrogen storage
“Large industrial hydrogen hubs are coming our way and will be key to decarbonising those ‘hard to reach’ sectors and activities. But storing hydrogen is hard, and existing approaches are unlikely to be a good fit in these settings. At Gravitricity, we are developing an approach to hydrogen storage that is specifically designed to deliver on what these industrial hubs will need.” - Robin Lane, Commercial Director at Gravitricity.

Off-Shore Wind Turbine
This turbine is the Haliade-X made by GE. It is 260m high and generates on average enough electricity to power 16,000 European homes.
Using an ocean wave simulator and a motion blur to achieve some movement. The clouds were made in post production using photoshop. This is a still-shot from a short animated sample I am making.
Flotta Hydrogen Hub
A 3d visualisation of the proposed Flotta Hydrogen Hub to be located on the Island of Flotta in Orkney. It would be located on the same site as the current oil facility. It would be linked to an offshore windfarm and use existing energy infrastructure to export energy to mainland UK.
Shockingly Fresh at Three Oaks
Shockingly Fresh commissioned me to visualise a unique technology in Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA). These tall greenhouse-like structures help improve food quality cleanliness and security while reducing foods carbon footprint.
After successful construction at Shockingly Fresh’s Offenham site, they asked me to visualise their designs on their Three Oaks site to show to planners. The site is located on the Courteenhall Estate, next to the M1. Shockingly Fresh Limited has been granted planning permission to begin construction.
This site has 10 hectares of greenhouse based around the ‘Saturn Bioponic system’, as showcased at their Offenham site. Construction at Three Oaks is expected to start in summer 2023.
Caldera Warmstone Heat Battery
I worked with client Caldera and green technology consultant Neil Davidson to develop a promotional image of their innovative zero-carbon Warmstone Battery. The client wanted to show the battery as an alternative to those living in rural settings who might be reliant on oil burning boilers for their heat.
Mocean Energy - Blue Horizon
A ‘hinged-raft wave energy converter’ (WEC) known as Blue Horizon that would provide renewable energy to the grid from wave farms of the coast (of Scotland).
The client Mocean Energy provided the CAD model of the WEC. The landscape was required to resemble west coast Scotland. The waves needed to be rough enough to show the 75m long WEC at its best. The immense area of seascape required made this visualisation immensely challenging for someone who had very little experience of 3d wave simulation previously. However the client was very pleased with the result.
Gravitricity - Energy Storage startup
Gravitricity are developing a new energy storage technology that consists of a very simple idea: A giant weight system that drops down into disused mine shafts to create power on demand using gravity.
For this image the client primarily wanted to show the small footprint of the plant. It had to located be in a semi-rural landscape and the lighting had to create a spectacle. The plant was provided as a CAD model (no textures) and my job was to construct the building and all the landscape around. The distant town / city is an image, and everything from the warehouses in the mid-distance to the trees upclose is 3d (apart from the people who are cut-outs). As always the most significant challenge was developing the correct lighting in correlation with the shaders.
Upon delivery the extensive use of the image across the media, including the BBC and the Guardian are testament to it’s success (as well as the amazingness of the technology of course!)
Mocean Energy - Blue Star
A wave energy converter conceived by Mocean Energy that will “provide reliable renewable energy to power a range of sub-sea applications – from subsea control systems to….fully autonomous underwater vehicles.”
The client provided the hard surface objects as CAD files. The brief required both above and below surface scenery to be shown without a distinct dividing line.
I used a stock image for the Oil Rig in the distance, so the wave generation / simulation together with lighting was the real challenge (aside from some minor modelling).
Kitchen Interior visualisation
The client was planning a very simple makeover of their kitchen-dining room. They commissioned me to show the new floor, kitchen units and work surfaces.
All else (table and chairs, painting, doors, windows, garden etc needed to remain the same. The output of the project was only to be two view-points, however in order to develop my portfolio I also animated a short fly-through.

Secrets of the Heath. 2017
A still from a proof of concept video that accompanied a proposal for an interactive display at Petersfield Museum. The project involved consulting archaologists, and using Lidar data to recreate the correct topology of the Petersfield Heath.

Utopian architecture - personal project.
Having modelled and lit a number of photorealistic visualisations I endeavoured here to make something a bit more stylised. For some reason the reflection of the clouds presented real issues, and it was only through a convoluted compositing workflow did I achieve the satisfying result depicted here.

Shockingly Fresh - Low-Carbon Greenhouse Development Visualisation
This still image (one of two) was requested by the client SF as a tool to aid a parish council understand the impact of the development on the surrounding environment.
The buildings were 4 metres high and significantly taller than other greenhouses. The second image showed the view of the site from the road.
Lidar data was used in the achieving the correct topology of the landscape.
Hooke Woods
Hooke Woods is a beautiful place in west Dorset where bluebells flourish in beech wood clearings to create sublime spaces.
This was a personal project to challenge myself to visualise that place, and to incorporate an old doorway broken off a hatch leading down underground, that amounted to a manifestation of the dark menacing forces always present in natural environments.
Here there are multiple particle systems that locate the various elements - Beech trees, dead branches, nettles, dead leaves, bluebells and then particles in the air that can only been seen in the animated final output.
Terra Firma - Landscape Architecture 3D Vis
A Hampshire based Landscape Architecture Consultancy commissioned me to create a promotional video for them. For the film, I was required to interview, to film the clients offices, to visit and film completed projects, and to create short animated visualisations of designs for projects.
This visualisation is a still shot from a few seconds of animation located at a small airport in the north of England, specifically the paved area that just outside the entrances to the various airport buildings. Generating and texturing the silver birch, heather and other plant material was the real challenge. I also learnt a valuable lesson about instancing in this project.
